find hand-crafted contemporary wood furniture for unique clients and unique needs
This page tracks the progress of myself and others at the College of the Redwoods
Summer Projects 2009 class. The class is held from July 7 to 31, 2009. It is eight
hours a day, six days a week of building your own design (or in my case,
someone else's -- see below.)
Tim's project is "vidar's chair." He is making a pair of them, something done by many
of the nine-month program students. The chairs were designed by Vidar Malmsten, the
son of Carl Malmsten who was Jim Krenov's cabinetmaking teacher.
Click here for a link to a pair made by another CR student.
The remainder of this page is arranged in reverse chronological order and will be
updated bi-weekly.

step one: look at the wood and determine where you are going to get your "parts." parts are
the building blocks of any project. In this case, it is legs, stretchers, seat parts (which are
completely hidden by the seat fabric (danish cord) so they are not that important from
a visual perspective, and the arms, and back rail parts.
much of the projects class first steps consist of "composing" the piece, including making
mockups to get an idea of the "space" that the object will consume as well as its
visual three-dimensional qualities. in my case, i am doing a reproduction with plans (always
approximate) so i am skipping that step.
tomorrow i will be sawing the back legs and have already determined where i will get all my
lower stretchers. after that, plane the legs to thickness and fair the faces to get them
ready for joinery.
original designs • quality craftsmanship • hand cut dovetails • hand planed and sanded surfaces
hand applied finishes • every piece receives the same fine attention to detail
