the commission experience

My favorite type of work is commissioned -- and not for the reason you might think!

I am most motivated when making something for someone and knowing that it has a home. I also especially like making homes for special objects -- my favorite type of commission.

We will discuss what you are going to do with the piece, how you will use it, view it, and how you want to experience it. Once we know these things, and what you are going to put into it, we can discuss types, textures, and colors of various woods and glass. Of course, your ideas on these are just as important as mine.

This process can proceed via e-mail, phone, and/or conventional mail, as well as via visit to my woodshop. (in cases where I am not the right person for the job, I will gladly suggest alternatives and/or help identify appropriate craftsman.) Once we have an agreement on size, shapes, colors, textures, etc. I will research the materials and labor and quote a price.

The price quoted is the final price, with the addition of Washington state sales tax and the cost of shipping if you do not pick up the piece. In some instances I may provide personal delivery and installation. Whatever the arrangements, they will be clear, businesslike, and friendly.

fitting doors to pear showcase. clients are encouraged to be part of the making process either via personal visits to the shop or "virtually." You are always free to comment, and I will likely solicit your input.

I do not accept deposits or down payments. This is my way of maintaining my woodworking freedom to do what I think is best for the piece. When the piece is complete and I am satisfied, then you are free to accept it on the agreed-upon terms. If you are not completely happy with it, then you are never under any obligation to accept it. I insist that you only accept what is right for you. I think the process we engage at the beginning will ensure that -- but there are always those times when our minds just don't meet.

everything i make is guaranteed for my lifetime. if you are every dissatisfied it will be repurchased for the original price.

I hope this helps make you feel at home with the process. Hand made furniture is expensive: you deserve to enjoy all aspects of it. Please feel free to call or write with questions.
